The purpose of the study is to examine how knowledgeable and comfortable pediatric primary care physicians perceive themselves to be in diagnosing and treating child/adolescent mental health and behavior health disorders.

The California Institute for Mental Health, a technical assistance and training organization for county mental health program, has developed a panel of rural mental health programs to highlight the success they have had in developing workforce and training programs in the face of numerous obstacles that have resulted in real- life changes in their workforce. The panel reflects the strength and perseverance of rural communities to sustain a unique and valuable way of life by using investing in people and places

1C  Getting Rural Peer Specialist Programs Up and Running

Dr. Ed Knight will present, a recognized researcher in this area, will present basic research on peer to peer interventions. Consumer peer specialists from three different rural settings will describe their work

1D  Serving Immigrants and Migrant Farm worker Families in an Integrated System of Care

The presentation will review the North Colorado Health Alliance and the system of care it provides for immigrant and migrant patients. Findings will be presented on patients' reported experience with integrated care.

1E  Citizen Soldier Support Project: Helping Communities Support Returning Veterans Across the Nation

This presentation will share information on a strategic partnership between two organizations to disseminate training to health and behavioral health professionals in rural areas for returning veterans and their families.

2B  Identifying Problem, Compulsive, Pathological Gamblers within your Caseload

Purpose of this workshop is to increase awareness of the need to assess participation in gaming in a client's history and the need to educate how participation in this activity may influence the client's recovery process.

2C  One-Stop Resources to Support and Sustain Your Rural Mental Health Organization

The presentation identifies how the National Library of Medicine and the Rural Assistance Center can help rural communities support and strengthen their mental health organizations by providing access to reliable information focused on rural.

2D  Cultural Attunement in Practice: Experiencing Behavioral Health Through Elders' Eyes

In a healing circle format, participants will experience the wisdom of Elders and the importance of a cultural attuned environment for educator, workforce development, and treatment.

This workshop/panel discussion describes ways to improve access to and acceptability of services designed for agricultural people and rural communities.

3B  Transitions to support Sustainability

Understanding that the tested and proven PROSPER model for partnership delivery of evidence based interventions is dependent of strong community engagement for long term sustainability

3C  Trauma and Telepsychiatry in Southwest Virginia

We will present 6 years of experience treating the mental health consequences of various forms of trauma in Appalachian, examining issues of co-morbidity, culture, and treatment through illustrative case examples.

The participant will learn how to build an environment of partnership that leads to systems change despite perceived system barriers.

This workshop will describe The Veterans Rural Health Resource Center Western Region (VRHRC-WR) work in the area of mental health with and emphasis on Native and elder veterans.

Session 4

4A1  Perceived Stigma and Mental Health Service Preferences for Parents of Children with Significant Psychosocial Concerns

This is an empirical paper examining rural parents’ perceived stigma around getting mental health services for their children. In addition, parents’ preferences for traditional vs. innovative services (e.g., integrated care, school-based, telehealth) were evaluated.

4A2  Mental Health Seeking of Rural Young Adults: A Look at Stigma and Help Seeking Barriers

Undergraduate thesis looking at influences of stigma and rural status on help seeking behaviors of young adults. Acceptability of innovative service delivery mechanisms may provide alternative sources of care.

4B  Recognizing Signs of High Stress, Anger, Depression, and Suicidal Thinking & Making Effective Referrals in Rural Settings

This workshop will provide research-based information, case examples, and practical handouts. It will provide steps how to prepare for and respond appropriately to rural clients with serious behavioral health issues.

4C  24/7 MH Crisis Services for Rural Communities

The issues involved in providing a comprehensive 24/7 crisis MH service in rural communities will be reviewed. Staffing and training, the use of technology in the provision of crisis services will be addressed.

4D  Behavioral Health Literacy Education, ethno geriatrics, and serving our aging clients

Health literacy is a challenge for all us and at different stages and conditions of our lives. This is especially true for our aging citizens. This session will challenge what we know about and how we provide behavioral health services for our seniors.

4E1  Psychotropic prescription and referral practices of pediatric primary care physicians in four rural regions of the United States

The purpose of the study is to examine the patterns psychotropic prescription and referral practices in pediatric primary care across four regions of the United States.

4E2  Methamphetamine Treatment in Rural Western North Carolina

This paper presentation will describe the implementation of an empirically-supported intervention for methamphetamine abuse, and outcomes will be contrasted with an intensive family-based intervention in rural Western North Carolina.

Session 5

5A  UPDATE: Transforming One Community at a Time from the Coast, the Forest, and the Frontier

A panel discussion/roundtable will highlight stories and successes from three unique rural areas of Texas in transforming mental health services through the formation of sustaining community collaboratives to address specific needs.

5B  Sierra Summit Brings Mental Health Collaboration to New Heights: The Formation of a Rural Collaborative

The Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee is a partnership of non-profit organizations working together to address fundamental needs of individuals and families in the Tahoe Truckee region of California. They are comprised of over 35 local system providers including: mental health providers, public health programs, social service agencies, education and community-based organizations who meet monthly to collaborative, network, share, and learn. The Tahoe Truckee Collaborative is working to address the needs of students with disabilities and other non-traditional students representing underserved communities who will be attending the new Sierra Community College Truckee campus. Sierra Community College is partnering with the collaborative to develop supported education and employment services that dynamically respond to local needs. The collaborative is dedicated to developing a local workforce that represent the community and people receiving services and will provide an overview of their work and experiences over the past two years, a local relationship with great opportunity for a thriving rural community.

5C  A Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Toolkit for Rural Primary Care Providers

A new Suicide Prevention Toolkit for Rural Primary Care Providers will be presented. The presentation will include rationale for development, an overview of the Toolkit, and data from pilot testing.

5D  Tales From Far Afield

Detail efforts to build awareness of trauma and mental health issues and train a local corps of mental health paraprofessionals to serve as counselors to refugees in Thailand.

5E  Innovations in graduate education: Telebehavioral Health in Alaska

Presentation describes a graduate course on telebehavioral health services-- to improve access, reduce costs associated with MedEvacing patients to hospitals, and provide care at the Alaska village level.

Session 6

6A  Development of an Alaska Psychology Internship Consortium

Access to mental health care in Alaska is seriously challenged by shortages across behavioral health professions. A pre-doctoral psychology internship consortium is being developed to help address workforce needs.

6B  Charting and Journaling for Mental Health Consumers and Professionals

Consumers: learn ways of charting and journaling for mental health, and how to apply them to yourself. Professionals: learn methods for supporting rural consumers through charting and journaling

6C  Co-Located Services in a Rural Virginia Primary Care Clinic

Most rural settings share a common challenge meeting needs with limited resources. This presentation seeks to present one model that addresses some of these challenges. Presenters will introduce an interdisciplinary collaborative approach in a co-located setting, which maximizes existing resources in order to provide better care.

6D1  Intervention- Whose responsibility is it?

Consumers in regional Australia are called upon to deal with crises by other consumers. 6 scenarios will be used to highlight this intervention and the outcomes for the consumers involved.

6D2  The role of empirically supported treatments in rural services for children and families

This paper will present a review of some of the basic literature regarding empirically supported treatments (ESTs) for children and families and their efficacy in rural communities.

6E1  Using Technologically Assisted Psychotherapeutic Intervention (TAPI) in the Treatment of Women Residing in Rural Utah Diagnosed with Depression: An Examination of Outcome and Satisfaction.

A unique teletherapy service delivery method capable of transcending the barriers of availability and accessibility is presented in the context of treating women with depression residing in rural Utah. Participant outcome and satisfaction are illustrated.

6E2  Inclusion in Early Childhood Settings: A Survey of Center-Based Practices

This presentation reports the results of a study of early childhood educators regarding provider education, training, and attitudes, and what factors significantly influence the practice of inclusion in childcare settings. Study implications regarding provider education and professional development for improved childcare inclusion for children with mental health issues will be discussed.

Session 7

7A  Challenges to Effective Clinical Supervision in Rural Practice

Rural clinical supervision is challenging. This paper reviews elements of best practices in clinical supervision and discusses strategies including telehealth technology for dealing with ethical, legal and clinical difficulties encountered.

7B  Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Core Competencies for Health and Allied Health Professionals

This training will provide a brief overview of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), including the psycho-social and cultural effects of FASDs; present the findings from a multi-phase needs assessment illuminating the educational needs of health providers related to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; and introduce the FASDs Competency-based Curriculum, including FASD-related core competencies for health providers.

7C  Trials and Tribulations of Establishing an Innovative Rural Acute Treatment Unit

We will take participants from concept, through design, implementation and finally operation of an innovative, rural, acute psychiatric treatment unit - despite funding and state licensing barriers.

7D  Emotions by Appointment Only: The impact of compartmentalizing our feelings

Healthcare providers need to continually monitor their own levels of stress and mental health. Recognizing and assessing one’s personal feelings and emotions is important to providing high quality care.

7E  Grand Ideas from Within

GRAND IDEAS FROM WITHIN is a school-wide, eighteen-week, creative imagery, prevention intervention program for 11-17 year olds. It meets the Language Arts Education Standards and is teacher-led using pre-recorded imagery CDs.
